Lite
SMB solution: Lite
Free and available for everyone
Lite distills our complex policy builder into an approachable tool for small business owners with no background check expertise. Through research, I learned these teams want to configure policies with as little friction as possible.
What I designed
A step-by-step guided workflow that walks users through only the essential decisions.
Pre-built templates that teams can apply instantly.
Why it matters
This tier dramatically reduces cognitive load and setup time, helping small teams go live quickly and minimizing the need for Implementation support.
Design explorations
Guided walkthrough
I designed a guided walkthrough that makes policy creation more conversational and includes more product-led growth. The walkthrough would have been a larger engineering lift and since Lite is not a monetized product, there was a drive to instead improve onboarding for the more complex paid tiers.
Design exploration II: Paywalled categories
Second, I explored paywalling advanced categories to show what the tool was capable of. These categories were found to be overwhelming to employers and had too much cognitive load.
Design exploration III: Simplified policy builder
I explored two directions for how to show the most simplified version of the policy builder:
Recap of design explorations
Designs v1
I aligned on the one-page experience and created an initial design to start usability testing:
Usability testing
We did usability testing with 35 customers through Usertesting.com:
Key design decisions
Show most commonly adopted policies. Five quickstart policies focusing on records generally considered less risky
Social benchmarking. Included how often each record type appeared, how many customers opted into each policy, and efficiency gains to encourage more adoption
Approachable design. Led with color-coded tags and friendly explanations
Product led-growth. Show value of Standard tier (for midmarket) and include clear path to upgrade
Impact
10,816 customers published policies, reducing manual work by 40%.
